Can Robinhood Agentic Trading Trade Crypto?
Yes. Robinhood agentic trading has supported crypto since July 2026 for eligible US customers. You connect your own AI agent (Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, Grok and others) to Robinhood's Trading MCP server, and it buys and sells crypto in a dedicated MCP account that holds only the money you move into it.
Robinhood's help center sets the boundaries:
- It trades in one account. The agent can read all your Robinhood accounts, positions, balances and history, but it can only place orders in the MCP account.
- It trades, it doesn't move. In Robinhood's words: “Your agent can trade crypto, but it can't transfer, stake, or lend it.”
- Not every state. Agent crypto trading “isn't available in some states, including New York.”
- Approvals are off by default. For external agents, trade approvals start off, so an agent you tell to act can place eligible orders without asking each time.
- Spot only. The crypto tools cover spot pairs tradable at Robinhood. No perpetual or futures tools are listed.
Equities came first, in a beta that opened on 2026-05-27. Crypto followed in July.
What the Robinhood Trading MCP Gives a Crypto Agent
Robinhood publishes its full tool list. The crypto section had nine tools when we checked on 2026-11-04:
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
get_currency_pairs | Lists the crypto assets Robinhood supports |
get_crypto_quotes | Bid, ask, mark and previous close |
get_crypto_positions | Crypto positions across your accounts |
get_crypto_orders | Crypto order history |
preview_crypto_order | Previews an order before it's sent |
place_crypto_order | Places the order |
cancel_crypto_order | Cancels an open order |
get_crypto_tax_lots | Open tax lots with cost basis |
get_crypto_account_onboarding_info | Crypto account onboarding status |
That's a complete execution kit: what can I trade, what does it cost right now, what do I hold, and send, preview or cancel an order. The preview_crypto_order step is the one to build every workflow around.
The Gap: 18 Market-Data Tools for Stocks, One Quote for Crypto
Robinhood's market data group has 18 tools, and every one covers stocks, indexes or options: get_equity_historicals, get_equity_technical_indicators, get_equity_news, get_earnings_calendar, get_equity_analyst_ratings, get_politician_trades, SEC filings and more.
A crypto agent gets get_crypto_quotes. There's no crypto candles tool, no crypto news, no crypto indicators, and nothing from the derivatives market that sets crypto prices.
So an agent asked “should I buy SOL today?” can see the price, and almost nothing about why it's moving. None of these questions has a tool on the Robinhood side:
- Is this move driven by leverage? (funding rates, open interest)
- Did longs just get flushed, or are they still crowded? (liquidations)
- Are institutions buying or selling? (spot ETF flows)
- Is the market trending, ranging or in shock? (regime models)
- What has price done over the last 200 days? (daily candles)
Robinhood doesn't offer perps to these agents, but perps still matter to you. Most crypto volume trades on perpetual futures, and when that leverage unwinds, the spot price you buy on Robinhood moves with it.
How to Set Up Robinhood Agentic Crypto Trading in Claude Code
The fix is a second MCP server: your agent decides with one and trades with the other. In Claude Code that takes two commands:
# 1. Robinhood: execution (command from Robinhood's help center)
claude mcp add robinhood-trading --transport http https://agent.robinhood.com/mcp/trading
# 2. CryptoDataAPI: market data (browser sign-in, no key pasted)
claude mcp add --transport http cryptodataapi https://cryptodataapi.com/mcpThen run /mcp in Claude Code, select robinhood-trading and authenticate. Robinhood prompts you to open the MCP account during that step. You need a primary individual investing account in good standing. CryptoDataAPI opens a browser sign-in on the first tool call, and signing in creates a free account if you don't have one.
Other clients take the same two URLs:
- Claude Desktop: Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector, once per URL (CryptoDataAPI steps).
- ChatGPT: turn on Developer Mode under Settings → Security & login, then add each URL under Plugins.
- Cursor: Cursor Settings → Tools & MCPs → Connect (CryptoDataAPI steps).
- Codex CLI:
codex mcp add robinhood-trading --url https://agent.robinhood.com/mcp/trading(CryptoDataAPI steps).
Robinhood Trading MCP vs CryptoDataAPI MCP: Which Does What
| Capability | Robinhood Trading MCP | CryptoDataAPI MCP |
|---|---|---|
| Place, preview, cancel crypto orders | Yes | No (read-only) |
| Your positions, balances, tax lots | Yes | No |
| Robinhood's live bid / ask | get_crypto_quotes | No: use Robinhood's quote to price the order |
| Daily candles (OHLCV) | Stocks, indexes and options only | /market-data/klines via query_api |
| Funding rates | No | get_funding_rates (Binance + Hyperliquid) |
| Open interest | No | get_open_interest |
| Liquidations | No | get_liquidations (BTC on free, every coin on Pro) |
| Sentiment | No | get_fear_greed, get_market_health |
| Spot ETF flows | No | get_etf_flows (BTC, ETH, SOL) |
| Market regime | No | get_cycle_regime; get_market_regime nowcast (Pro) |
| Technicals (RSI, Bollinger, support / resistance) | Stocks only | /indicators/technical/{symbol} (Pro) |
The split is clean. Robinhood is the only one that touches your money. CryptoDataAPI can't place an order, read your account or see your balance. It only answers questions about the market.
The coverage lines up too. The coins Robinhood lists, such as BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP and DOGE, all trade as perps on Binance and Hyperliquid, which is where our funding, open interest and liquidation data comes from.
Example: A Pre-Trade Check Before Every Robinhood Crypto Order
Give your agent a standing rule. Paste this into your Claude Code session or CLAUDE.md:
Before any crypto order on Robinhood:
1. Call cryptodataapi get_cycle_regime and get_market_health.
2. For the coin, call get_funding_rates, get_open_interest and get_liquidations.
3. Summarise: regime, health score, funding, 24h long vs short liquidations.
4. If the regime is structural-shock or funding is above 0.05% per 8h,
tell me and stop.
5. Otherwise call robinhood-trading preview_crypto_order and show me the preview.
Never call place_crypto_order without my explicit "yes".If you'd rather script the check than trust a prompt, here's the same logic against the REST API. It uses the same key and endpoints the MCP tools call:
import os, requests
API = "https://cryptodataapi.com/api/v1"
H = {"X-API-Key": os.environ["CRYPTODATA_API_KEY"]}
COIN = "BTC" # free keys get BTC liquidations; Pro covers every coin
def get(path, **params):
r = requests.get(f"{API}{path}", headers=H, params=params, timeout=15)
r.raise_for_status()
return r.json()
health = get("/market-health")
regime = get("/regimes")["current"]
funding = get("/derivatives/funding-rates", coin=COIN)
liq = get("/market-intelligence/liquidations", symbol=COIN)["data"][0]
rate = funding["binance"]["current_rate"] # fraction per funding interval (8h on BTC)
longs = liq["long_liquidation_usd_24h"]
shorts = liq["short_liquidation_usd_24h"]
context = {
"regime": regime["name"],
"health": f'{health["total_score"]}/100 ({health["state"]})',
"funding_pct_8h": round(rate * 100, 4),
"long_share_of_24h_liqs": round(longs / max(longs + shorts, 1), 2),
}
stand_down = regime["anchor"] == "structural-shock" or rate > 0.0005
print(context)
print("STAND DOWN" if stand_down else "OK TO PREVIEW")On 2026-11-04 it printed:
{'regime': 'Structural Shock / Crisis', 'health': '45/100 (fear)', 'funding_pct_8h': 0.01, 'long_share_of_24h_liqs': 0.62}
STAND DOWNThe regime model had been in Structural Shock / Crisis for a day. Funding was calm at 0.01% per 8h, but 62% of the last 24h of BTC liquidations were longs. A Robinhood quote shows none of that. The thresholds here are examples, not advice: tune them to your strategy, and back-test them before you trust them.
Guardrails Before an Agent Trades Crypto Unattended
- Turn approvals on first. They start off for MCP accounts. Switch them on in Agent Settings → your MCP account → your agent → Safety Controls → Trade approvals. Robinhood says this control is still rolling out for MCP accounts.
- Fund it with what you'd accept losing. Robinhood's disclosure warns of losing your entire principal. The MCP account limits the damage only if you keep it small.
- Preview, always. Make
preview_crypto_ordera required step beforeplace_crypto_order. - Remember the read scope. The agent can read every Robinhood account you have, not just the MCP account. Choose your AI provider with that in mind.
- Check freshness. Every CryptoDataAPI response carries a timestamp (
as_ofortimestamp). Tell the agent to treat stale data as no data. - Keep keys out of chat. Use the browser sign-in, or a
${CRYPTODATA_API_KEY}header placeholder. Never paste a raw key into the conversation.
When This Setup Makes Sense (and When It Doesn't)
Good fit:
- You're a US customer trading spot BTC, ETH, SOL or other majors on a daily or swing timeframe.
- You want broker custody and a human approval step, with the agent doing the research and drafting the order.
Not a fit:
- You live in New York or another excluded state: agent crypto trading isn't available there.
- You want leverage or shorts: Robinhood's agent crypto tools are spot-only. Perp venues such as Hyperliquid have their own APIs, and the same CryptoDataAPI tools cover them.
- You need fast execution: every order goes through an LLM turn and an MCP round trip. That's fine for daily decisions and wrong for scalping.
- You want coins moved on-chain: agents can't transfer, stake or lend.
CryptoDataAPI isn't affiliated with Robinhood. Robinhood's tool list changes between releases; the details here were checked against its help center on 2026-11-04.
Frequently asked questions
Can Robinhood agentic trading trade crypto?
Yes. Since July 2026, eligible US customers can let an external AI agent buy and sell crypto through Robinhood's Trading MCP server, in a dedicated MCP account. The agent can trade but cannot transfer, stake or lend crypto, and agent crypto trading isn't available in some states, including New York.
What is the Robinhood Trading MCP URL?
https://agent.robinhood.com/mcp/trading. In Claude Code, run: claude mcp add robinhood-trading --transport http https://agent.robinhood.com/mcp/trading, then run /mcp, select robinhood-trading and authenticate.
What crypto tools does the Robinhood Trading MCP have?
Nine as of 2026-11-04: get_currency_pairs, get_crypto_quotes, get_crypto_positions, get_crypto_orders, preview_crypto_order, place_crypto_order, cancel_crypto_order, get_crypto_tax_lots and get_crypto_account_onboarding_info. The only market-data call is get_crypto_quotes, which returns bid, ask, mark and previous close.
Does the Robinhood MCP give funding rates, open interest or liquidation data?
No. Its market-data tools cover stocks, indexes and options. Add a crypto data MCP server alongside it, such as CryptoDataAPI at https://cryptodataapi.com/mcp, for funding rates, open interest, liquidations, spot ETF flows and market regimes.
Does a Robinhood agent need my approval for every crypto trade?
Not by default. Trade approvals are off by default for MCP accounts used by external agents, so an agent told to act can place eligible orders without confirmation. Turn them on in Agent Settings under Safety Controls; Robinhood says this is still rolling out for MCP accounts.
Can a Robinhood AI agent trade crypto perps or futures?
No. The crypto tools cover spot pairs tradable at Robinhood, and no perpetual or futures tools are listed for agents.
