Layer 2 & Scaling Coins
Rollups and scaling networks that settle back to a base chain like Ethereum. They live and die on throughput, fees and how much activity migrates onto them.
Quick answer: Crypto Data API tracks 50 coins in its Layer 2 & Scaling category, with a combined market cap of $143.62B. The largest is USDC (USDC) at $75.44B, followed by Zcash (ZEC) and Chainlink (LINK). Over the last 24 hours the category moved +1.38% on a market-cap-weighted basis.

What are Layer 2 & Scaling Coins?
Layer 2 (L2) networks execute transactions away from a base chain, usually Ethereum, then post the results back to it for security. Optimistic rollups (Arbitrum, Optimism, Base) assume transactions are valid unless challenged; zero-knowledge rollups (Starknet, zkSync, Scroll, Taiko) prove validity with cryptographic proofs.
L2 tokens are mostly governance tokens. Some are gaining roles in sequencing or staking, but the fees users pay are usually denominated in ETH, so the link between network usage and token value is weaker than for a Layer 1 coin.
What moves Layer 2 & Scaling Coins
Activity and fees
Daily transactions and sequencer revenue show whether users are actually migrating to the rollup.
Value accrual changes
Governance votes that add fee sharing, staking or decentralised sequencing can re-rate a token.
Token unlocks
Many L2 tokens launched with large team and investor allocations, and scheduled unlocks weigh on price.
ETH sentiment
L2 tokens trade as high-beta ETH proxies, so ETH's trend usually sets the direction.
Key risks
- Governance-only tokens can lag even when the network itself grows.
- Sequencers are still centralised on many rollups, which is an operational and regulatory risk.
- Competition from app-specific chains and faster L1s squeezes fees.

Layer 2 & Scaling Coins FAQ
What is a Layer 2 in crypto?
A Layer 2 is a network that processes transactions off a base blockchain, usually Ethereum, and posts compressed results or proofs back to it. This keeps the base chain's security while cutting fees and increasing throughput.
What is the difference between optimistic and ZK rollups?
Optimistic rollups assume transactions are valid and allow a challenge window (often about 7 days for withdrawals). ZK rollups publish a validity proof with each batch, so withdrawals can finalise as soon as the proof is verified.
Which Layer 2 tokens are the largest?
Arbitrum (ARB), Optimism (OP), Polygon (POL), Mantle (MNT), Starknet (STRK) and zkSync (ZK) are among the largest by market cap. The live table on this page is sorted by current market-cap rank.
Does Base have a token?
Base, Coinbase's L2, has no native token at the time of writing. That is why it does not appear in this list, even though it is one of the most active rollups.
