Layer 1 Crypto Coins
Layer-1 / smart-contract platform and app-chain tokens (e.g. ETH, SOL, HYPE, TAO). Their value tends to scale with network usage, so they can see upside as the number of users and on-chain activity grows.
Quick answer: Crypto Data API tracks 50 coins in its Layer 1 Platforms category, with a combined market cap of $2.49T. The largest is Bitcoin (BTC) at $1.69T, followed by Ethereum (ETH) and BNB (BNB). Over the last 24 hours the category moved +0.63% on a market-cap-weighted basis.

What are Layer 1 Crypto Coins?
A Layer 1 (L1) is a base blockchain that settles its own transactions and secures itself with its own validators or miners. Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain, Avalanche, Sui, Aptos, TON and Hyperliquid's L1 are all examples. The native coin pays gas fees, is staked to secure the network and is usually the main collateral inside its ecosystem.
Because every app on the chain needs the native coin for fees, L1 coins are effectively a bet on the chain's future activity: more users, more apps and more value settled on-chain tend to mean more demand for the token.
What moves Layer 1 Crypto Coins
On-chain activity
Transactions, active addresses and fees paid. Fee revenue is the closest thing an L1 has to earnings.
TVL and stablecoin supply
Capital parked in the chain's DeFi apps and the stablecoins issued on it show where liquidity is choosing to live.
Token supply schedule
Staking issuance, burns and investor unlocks change the float. Large unlocks are a recurring source of sell pressure.
Ecosystem momentum
New apps, memecoin seasons and airdrops pull users between chains quickly, so rotation between L1s is common.
Key risks
- Competition is intense and market share moves fast between chains.
- Outages, bridge exploits or validator centralisation can hit a chain's credibility overnight.
- Most L1s trade with high beta to ETH and BTC, so they fall harder in broad sell-offs.

Layer 1 Crypto Coins FAQ
What is a Layer 1 blockchain?
A Layer 1 is a base blockchain that processes and finalises its own transactions with its own consensus (proof of stake or proof of work). Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain and Avalanche are Layer 1s. Layer 2s, by contrast, execute transactions off the base chain and settle back to it.
What are the biggest Layer 1 coins?
By market cap the largest smart-contract Layer 1 coins are typically ETH, SOL and BNB, followed by chains such as TRX, ADA, AVAX, SUI, TON and HYPE. The live table on this page is sorted by market-cap rank and updates throughout the day.
Is Bitcoin a Layer 1?
Yes. Bitcoin is a proof-of-work Layer 1, but it is not a general smart-contract platform, so it sits in our Proof of Work and Bitcoin Ecosystem categories rather than this platform list.
What makes a Layer 1 coin go up?
Demand for blockspace. Rising fees, active users, TVL and stablecoin supply on the chain, combined with a manageable token unlock schedule, are the fundamentals most often associated with L1 outperformance.
