What are DeFi Coins?
DeFi (decentralised finance) coins are the tokens of protocols that rebuild financial services on-chain with smart contracts: exchanges (Uniswap, Curve), lending markets (Aave, Morpho, Compound), stablecoin issuers (Maker/Sky, Ethena), liquid staking (Lido) and yield trading (Pendle).
Many DeFi protocols earn real fee revenue, and a growing number share it with token holders through buybacks or staking. That makes DeFi one of the few crypto sectors that can be valued on cash flows.
What moves DeFi Coins
TVL and fees
Total value locked shows capital commitment; protocol fees and revenue show how much it earns.
Token value accrual
Fee switches, buybacks and staking rewards change how much of that revenue reaches holders.
Leverage demand
Borrowing demand and funding rates drive lending and derivatives revenue, so DeFi heats up in risk-on markets.
Regulation
Clarity on whether DeFi tokens are securities, and on fee sharing, is a recurring sector-wide catalyst.
Key risks
- Smart-contract exploits and oracle manipulation can cause losses.
- Tokens are high-beta to ETH and fall hard in deleveraging events.
- Governance concentration and ongoing emissions can dilute holders.

DeFi Coins FAQ
What are DeFi coins?
DeFi coins are tokens of decentralised finance protocols, meaning apps that offer trading, lending, borrowing, staking or yield through smart contracts instead of banks or brokers. Examples include UNI, AAVE, LDO, PENDLE and ENA.
How do DeFi tokens make money for holders?
It depends on the protocol. Some share fees through staking or buybacks (for example Aave buybacks or Maker/Sky's surplus), while others are governance-only. Checking fees, revenue and the token's actual claim on them is the key step.
What is TVL?
Total Value Locked is the dollar value of assets deposited in a protocol's smart contracts. It measures capital committed to DeFi but not profitability, so it is best read alongside fees and revenue.
Are DeFi coins correlated with Ethereum?
Yes, most DeFi tokens are high-beta to ETH because much of DeFi's liquidity and collateral lives on Ethereum and its Layer 2s.
